A local tradition in the Southwest during the holidays, dating back more than 300 years, is to put out small paper lanterns with a candle inside called “luminarias” or “farolitos”. Introduced by European missionaries, these farolitos were originally small bonfires along the roads to celebrate the birth of Christ and guide people to Midnight Mass on the final night of Las Posadas
