According to Hopi legend, Spider Grandmother is the wisdom keeper, the grandmother figure, the female figure. She takes the shape of an old, or timeless woman or the shape of a common spider. She often appears in stories as a powerful teacher and helper. The Hopi believe that she thought the world itself into existence. She is also known as Spider Woman in other Southwestern Native American cultures. The Navajo teach that she is the savior of human kind.
