The beat of the drum represents the power of music. Power and strength in many Native American people’s culture is symbolized by a legendary creature, the Native Thunderbird. It is often seen as the most powerful of all spirits. It can transform into human form by opening his head up like a mask and taking his feathers off as if they were a mere blanket. Here, in this artwork, I imagine the Thunderbird coming alive through the power of music.
