Kokopelli is an iconic flute-playing image from Hopi art that dates back to 3,000 year old Anasazi glyphs. He or she is known for many things – a fertility god, prankster, healer and storyteller. The myth I painted here shows him/her travelling from village to village bringing the change of winter to spring. Many Southwestern Native Americans believed that the hunch on his/her back was a sack where he/she carried seeds and songs.
